Victims identified, new details released in weekend crash on Alcoa Highway

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The victims' names and new details have been released about a deadly crash on Alcoa Highway in Knoxville Saturday morning.

Previous story: 1 dead, 1 recovering at UT Medical following wreck on Alcoa Highway

Officers say a pickup truck driven by Johnny Clowers, Jr., 29, was traveling north on Alcoa Highway around 3:30 a.m. near Ginn Road at a high rate of speed. The left front tires went off the shoulder of the highway. Clowers over-corrected, causing the vehicle to spin.

The vehicle then went off the right shoulder and into a ditch where it then flipped onto its side before hitting a utility pole.

Clowers was not wearing a seat belt.

Clowers' passenger, Amanda Johnson, 34 of Maryville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said she was wearing a seat belt.

Police say both Clowers and Johnson had consumed alcohol and open alcohol and drug paraphernalia were inside the vehicle.

Clowers was driving on a suspended license. Charges are pending the conclusion of the investigation.
