Suspect arrested hours after Oak Ridge officer stops him from ramming car into convenience store

OAK RIDGE (WATE) - Oak Ridge police have arrested a suspect, several hours after they stopped him from ramming his car into a convenience store early Tuesday morning.

Sherrius Smith, 20, was arrested at an apartment on W. Vista Ridge Way around 11:10 a.m. He will be charged with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of Schedule VI controlled substances for resale, reckless endangerment, evading arrest, drug free school zone violations, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

Authorities says officers were called to investigate a suspicious black sedan around 1:40 a.m. at the Rocky Top Convenience Store, which is located on the 1100 block of Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Police say Smith and a 17-year-old girl were allegedly drunk and making a disturbance after leaving the store.

Officials say once they arrived on scene, Smith physically resisted an officer, and during the struggle, both entered the front driver’s side door of the car. Smith then placed the car into drive and accelerated toward the store.

ORPD says the officer managed to turn the wheel of the car, directing it away from the building.  The vehicle struck a steel post instead, which disabled it.

No charges are expected against the juvenile. The investigation is ongoing.
