Alcoa (WATE) - Crowds of people turned out for FreedomFest in Alcoa for the Independence Day celebration at the Alcoa Duck Pond.

A fireworks display was the final touch on a day full of family fun.

"This is a chance for our family to get together and hang out and have a good time," Gretchen Foister said.

Foister came to the event with her two sons, Gage and Christian, and her friend Monia Peace.

Peace said she lives around the corner in Alcoa and was disappointed when the event was canceled in 2009 because of a sluggish economy.

"It gives us a place to bring the kids out and sit back and relax and enjoy some good fireworks without having to go down to Knoxville and make the drive," Peace said.

The event was back in full force this year with people of all ages enjoying the live music and snacking on the delicious food.

"I'm working on a foot-long corn dog," seven-year-old Manny Jimenez said. "They have great food," said nine-year-old Alissa Harrell. "I've had their cheesy fries. They're really good."

This was the 36th family festival event and visitors said they hope it's here to stay for good. "You look at the crowd, people show up," Maryville resident Scott Lovell said. "It's worth having if people show up for it."
