NEWPORT (WATE) - A local volunteer fire department is selling fireworks this week to help fund their yearly budget. The Grassy Fork Volunteer Fire Department has a fireworks stand in Hartford.

Chris Constante drives from North Carolina every year to buy fireworks there. A volunteer firefighter himself, he knows how tight money can be.

"I think it's good for them because they're promoting the fire department. They don't have that much money so I think it's a good thing they do this and I just try to support them any way I can," Constante said.

"They're a volunteer fire department so they don't get paid. This is one way for them to make money," said Cocke County resident Brenda Wilburn.

Grassy Fork Fire Chief Walt Cross says they're hoping to raise $10,000 this week.

"We're able to keep that money right here in our community," Cross said.

He says fundraisers like this will help keep the department from having to go to a paid service.

"That's something in the future that we all have to take a look at and hopefully we don't have to go there," Cross said.

Cross says in the seven years he's been with the department, he's never responded to an emergency call involving fireworks. "That's another good reason for having fire departments do it, we can teach people when they come in about being safe," Cross said.

State law allows the department to sell the fireworks with no sales tax. The stand is open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. until July 5.

Organizers say you can get 10 percent more free by mentioning WATE. Military and emergency personnel can also receive 15 percent off.
