KNOXVILLE (WATE) - There's a plan in the works for cleaning up the waters of Fountain City Lake, also known as the duck pond. Many 6 News viewers reached out to us commenting on the current condition there.

If you visit, you'll notice the lake is about one foot below the normal level because of leaks coming from the dam.

"It's filthy. It needs to be cleaned so bad, and these poor ducks," said Fountain City native Brandy Stewart.

While today there may be trash and sludge, in the near future it's going to be clean. That's because Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero included in this year's budget $250,000 to clean Fountain City Lake.

"What's taking so long in doing this? I've been down here so many times and it keeps getting worse," added Stewart.

It's a three phase project where solutions include new pipes, aeration materials, draining and dredging the lake, as well as maintenance plans. We wanted to know why the lake looks so bad.

"There's no cold water against the bottom, there's not much depth, there's not much circulation. It pretty much just sits there in the sun and warms up and grows more stuff," said Director of Engineering for Knoxville Jim Hagerman.

We've learned designs are being drawn and by October or November crews will begin construction.

In the meantime, some visitors say they can't stand the lake being in such poor shape.

"We were going to come down here one weekend with my grandmother's kayak and just use the pool cleaner to scrape the stuff off the top," said resident Nora Taylor.

The Lion's Club says that's not a good idea because of the many risks involved.

The project should be finished in about a year, if not longer.

"The highest priority was to deal with the leaks, but after we do that it's not going to fix everything. We'll continue to be working on this," said Hagerman.

It'a a job people hope happens sooner, rather than later.

"When it's cleaned up it's absolutely beautiful," said Stewart.

The last time Fountain City Lake had a major clean up, draining and dredging, was about 10 years ago. One short term solution the city is currently having inmates from the county jail volunteer time by cleaning the algae out of the lake once a month.
