KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Hundreds of people spent the day celebrating the Fourth of July at the Cove at Concord Park in West Knoxville.

It wasn't your run of the mill backyard barbeque for Sandra Steen and friends, who were grilling out next to the lake.

"We're just holding down the spot, okay? It's gotten hot and now it's time to eat," said Steen.

They were celebrating Independence Day the best way, with good food and good friends.

"Fourth of July really is one of my favorite holidays, it really is. I love to see the people out. I love to see the children out. It's just so much fun," added Steen.

Fun was exactly the goal for three year old Olivia Churchman.

"I want to go swimming," she said.

Besides swimming, it wasn't hard to spot people playing in the sand. Nathan Bowman and his friends were playing beach volleyball.

"It's just a great sport to play and a place where you can see the lake and nature really dominates the area," he said.

This group of friends still took time out to reflect on the meaning of the Fourth of July.

"Just thinking about the great nation we live in and the power of this holiday really, earning our independence as a nation," said Bowman.

According to the National Retail Federation, on average a family will spend close to $70 on food to grill out on Independence Day. Nationwide, Americans are spending $6.2 billion on hamburgers and snacks.
