KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Knoxville Police Department is searching for three suspects after a robbery in Fort Sanders that led to a police pursuit and crash.

Officials say the incident began around 3 p.m. with a robbery at the Grand Forest apartment complex at 1714 Grand Avenue in the Fort Sanders neighborhood.

"You hear about a robbery in Grand Forest and it's just, oh, somebody else got robbed, as sad as it is to say," said Erick Farmer, a student at the University of Tennessee.

Farmer has lived in the Fort Sanders area for three years now and is just learning that three men robbed an apartment across the street from him. Mainly college students live in the apartments and some weren't sure what was happening Tuesday afternoon.

"I just saw a bunch of police cars, probably about 4 or 5, pull into the back parking lot. I guess they responded pretty quickly, but I just saw them hanging around the apartment. I didn't know what was going on," said Matthew Cantley, another University of Tennessee student.

Knoxville police say it was an armed robbery, but nobody was hurt. The people who were inside the apartment tell 6 News they did not know the suspects who are two black men and a white man. They managed to get away using a stolen gray Kia van.

An officer spotted the van on Western Avenue near Interstate 40, which immediately fled. The van crashed into a red Toyota Celica driven by Ruby Dotson, 65, at the intersection of Summit Hill Drive and Bell Street.

Dotson was taken to Fort Sanders Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Before police could find the three men, they ran away from the crash.

As for Farmer, this incident is reminding him to be cautious in the area.

"Nothing new here. There has been several robberies since I've been living in the fort and it seems like the same motives every time," said Farmer.

The gray van was reported stolen from South Knoxville on June 29. Anyone with information should call KPD at (865) 215-7212.

This isn't the first time there's been a problem at the Grand Forest apartment complex. 19 year old Sawyer Webb was shot and killed during a robbery there back in 2011.
