KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A North Knox County store was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday morning and deputies are searching for the suspect.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office says a man with a handgun entered Sunrise Market, 8802 Tazewell Pike, shortly before noon and demanded money. He took an unknown amount of cash from the register and made the two owners lie on the floor as he fled.

No one was hurt.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian man standing 6 feet tall, weighing 180 to 200 pounds and heavy set. He was wearing shorts and a hooded jacket.

Deputies say based on the description, it may be the same suspect who robbed the Discount Tobacco store, also on Tazewell Pike, two weeks ago.

A few miles down from those businesses is Friends Market and Deli in Union County. A few years ago, the store was robbed at night.

"They busted out the back glass and stole I think some $3,000 worth of cigarettes one night. Ever since then we usually keep all of our money dropped in the safe, and then we usually don't keep too much cash in the drawer," said employee Daniel Davis.

And they're now using security cameras.

"We have cameras in every window, and then we have motion detectors and a camera in the back, and then we have cameras all the way around the store that keep an eye on the place," Davis said.

He says they haven't had any issues since tightening their security, but he's more alert after the recent string of armed robberies in the area.

"I think that's one reason they hit them down there because it ain't as busy, and there's not a whole lot of cars around and it's an easy getaway."

If you have any information about these cases you're asked to call the Knox County Sheriff's Office at 865-215-2243.
