KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Congressman Jimmy Duncan is one of several Republican leaders calling for the deployment of the National Guard at the U.S./Mexico border as an emergency response.

“If we don’t secure our borders, we won't have a country,” Duncan told reporters Friday. “We'll destroy America as we know it."

Duncan said more manpower is needed at the border to deal with the thousands of Central American children crossing into America.

Duncan said the federal government already has the funds to cover the cost of the deployment.

“The funds for the border patrol for instance have doubled over the last ten years which is about three times the rate of inflation,” Duncan said. “We've more than doubled the number of agents, the number of employees."

Crowds of unaccompanied children are being held in border patrol facilities.

“We need to in as humane and kind way as possible, get these children back to their parents and their home countries,” Duncan said. “We can't destroy our own country just because we feel so sorry for these people who are living in poverty in these other countries."

Sen. Lamar Alexander is also calling for the deployment of the National Guard.

"We need to send these unaccompanied children back home safely, as quickly as possible, and we should cut off foreign aid to countries that don't cooperate,” Alexander said. “If a Democratic amendment to legislation that passed in 2008 makes it more difficult to send these unaccompanied children back to a safe place in their own countries, then we need to change the law."

Sen. Bob Corker released the following statement regarding the issue: “I’m concerned the administration has chosen again to throw money at a problem and avoid the changes necessary to the current law to address this humanitarian crisis and return these children safely and expeditiously to their home countries.”

“We must immediately secure the border,” Congressman Chuck Fleischmann said in a statement to 6 News. “ Our immigration system was intentionally created to legally and methodically allow immigrants to enter our country and become Americans. This is a humanitarian situation that must be dealt with in a vigilant manner, and these children must be returned home to prevent further problems. “
