KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A New York woman's journey to see all 50 states has landed her in Knoxville.

Amber Nolan starts each leg of her trip out the same way: "I have a funny story for you. I am a travel writer who has been hitchhiking across the United States," she says.

Nolan's version of hitchhiking is a little unconventional though.

Instead of catching rides on the ground, she takes to the skies.

"They usually give me this kind of crazy look at first like you're doing what?" she said.

She calls it jet hiking.

Her goal is to hit all 50 states.

She has been to 42 so far and landed in Knoxville Friday.

"I just wanted an adventure. I'm a travel writer so I've been all over the world and haven't really seen my own back yard," said Nolan.

She logs her journey on a blog and also plans to write a book.

Staying in hostels or camping, she calls it budget travel, but she says once she lands it is not always easy to hit the air again.

"I've been stuck quite a few places for weeks on end, had to pick up work waitressing and working as a housekeeper," she said.

Her ultimate goal is to breathe new life into what she calls a dying breed of small aviation.

"It's really a fun hobby for a lot of people and it's becoming harder and harder for people to stay with it as costs are rising. Aviation has a freedom associated with it. You get up in the air and nothing else really matters anymore," said Nolan.

She has spent two years jet hiking across the country.

Her next goal is to head north and make it to Alaska before winter.
