ROANE COUNTY (WATE) - A group of people in Roane County are using Facebook to help keep their communities safe. It's called the Roane County Neighborhood Watch Group.

You'll see posts about anything from lost and found, to stolen items and scams. Users say it's giving them the freedom to take matters into their own hands, and instantly get help from their neighbors.

Immediately after watching someone drive off with his mail, Jeff Patton called the Kingston Police Department, and then turned to the page to warn others.

"Social media is pretty powerful these days so I thought I'd go that route just to let everybody know what happened," Patton said.

"I believe there's a lot of thieves and other stuff that's been caught because people posting on there and letting everybody aware of it," says user Brandy Pelfrey.

She's using the page to help find her mom's lost dog. She says every county should have something like this.

"It's good you can get on there and people update about what's happening in their neighborhood, thieves and if someone stole something you can be on the lookout."
