GATLINBURG (WATE) - A brand new sports complex opened its doors this week in Gatlinburg, and young athletes from all across East Tennessee are already putting it to use.

Rocky Top Sports World is located on Sports World Boulevard next to Gatlinburg-Pittman High School.

Funded by the City of Gatlinburg and Sevier County, the state of the art facility is a youth sports tournament complex, primarily focused on those with athletes ages 6 to 16.

They will not only hold tournaments for people from all across the country, but for athletes that live in East Tennessee, will host a number of athletic camps.

Rocky Top has 86,000 square feet of indoor space, including six hardwood courts.

"We can convert the facility from completely volleyball to completely basketball in about 15 minutes,” said Lori Moore of Rocky Top Sports World.

They also have seven outdoor fields.

"Six of those fields are state of the art synthetic turf so rain does not cause a problem so we can continue to play,” said Moore.

Moore says the location, by the mountains and in the heart of tourist-attraction filled Gatlinburg, means more people will want to come participate in tournaments here, which will give the local economy a boost.

"It's a great opportunity for people to come in, enjoy a great tournament experience, but also have a vacation. Extend it. Come a day early or stay a day late,” said Moore.

It’ll also give travelers a reason to come.

"It's really just going to be a world class experience that they come and are able to have here in the mountains,” said Moore.
