ALCOA (WATE) - A loaded firearm was discovered Tuesday night in a carry-on bag at McGhee Tyson Airport.

The Transportation Security Administration says the loaded 9mm Taurus was found around 5 p.m. TSA immediately notified airport police who took possession of the bag and issued a citation to the passenger.

Firearms are allowed in checked baggage if they are declared to the airline, in a proper carrying case and unloaded. They are, however, not permitted in carry-on bags.

The TSA wants to remind passengers to thoroughly search their bags for any potential dangerous weapons or prohibited items before leaving for the airport. Safety is the TSA's first concern, and they say having these items on the aircraft is dangerous to other travelers and can easily be mistaken as an intentional attempt to bring prohibited items onto an aircraft.

This is the sixth firearm discovered at a security checkpoint by TSA officers at TYS this year. A total of eight firearms were found at TYS checkpoints in 2013.

In addition to potential criminal charges, passengers who bring firearms to a checkpoint face civil penalties from TSA:
