KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Back to school season is getting closer and closer, and for a lot of area children and their families, that means a flurry of shopping and spending to gear up for the new semester.

Too often though, families in need simply can't afford new clothes and supplies as their kids head back to class. One Knoxville church is working to bridge the gap for these families ahead of the new school year.

Faith United Methodist Church is in the middle of completing a brand new addition to the back of their church that is going to house the “Kids Kloset," the church’s new ministry for the community.

"We've been working on this project for a long time. It's been a dream and it's been in our prayers,” said Faith United Methodist Church Youth Minister Bryon Easterday.

The free standing storage unit will be a resource for local families in need who can visit the church to receive clothing and school supplies for their children for free.

The church has already received enough donations to fill one of their Sunday school classrooms, but they're hoping to get a lot more by the time they open in two weeks.

They’re asking the community for donations, everything from children’s clothing and shoes to new backpacks.

"Their clothes. Blue jeans, shorts T-shirts,” said Easterday. "It's just something that people in the community can feel good about knowing they can bring their clothes here and the children right here in our own backyards are going to benefit from it."

The new Kids Kloset building may be small, but it’s helping some of Knoxville’s youngest students in a big way.

"Give them a little bit of hope and just knowing that somebody else cares about them,” said Easterday.

The church is also asking for donations of gift cards to stores like Walmart or Target. They will hand those out to families as well so they can purchase specific items they aren’t able to find at Kids Kloset.

Faith United Methodist Church is going to hold a ribbon cutting Sunday, July 27 around noon. Kids Kloset will officially open to the public on August 2.

After that, they will be open the first Wednesday of every month from 6 p.m. to 7:30 pm, as well as the third Saturday of each month.

They are working with area schools to identify families who need their help, but any families out there who would like to visit Kids Kloset can contact the church at (865) 688-1000 or by visiting their website
