SEYMOUR (WATE) - A Blount County child was mauled by a pit bull Monday afternoon around 4:30.

It happened near the boy's home on Burnette Station Road in Seymour.

The victim's great-grandfather, Frank Enter, says 7-year-old Austin Foust was rushed to surgery at UT Medical Center right after it happened.

Enter says Foust had one ear bitten off, and the other severely damaged. He says he doesn't know if doctor's will be able to re-attach the ear.

The dog belongs to the boy's uncle, who lives next door on the same property. Enter says they've never had any problems with the pit bull before, but the children just moved there this weekend so he says the dog wasn't used to them.

"I think the dog saw somebody and wanted to play, and then it went from there to disaster."

Enter says Foust and his big brother Ryan had just brought over dinner, as they were walking back to their house just a few feet away, the dog got off his chain and attacked Foust.

"Somehow or another the chain snapped and he ran after the boys and they started yelling," Enter said.

The uncle's friend was home at the time, and was able to stop the attack by putting the dog in a choke hold.

"By that time Austin got to his house and he put his hand on the door and there was blood just all the way down the door, and that's when I knew there was a problem," Enter said.

He says Foust was bit on his arm, face and both ears. His left ear was bitten off.

"I kept telling Austin, God gave us two ears just in case we lose one we always have one to depend on. He got a kick out of it, but he was hurting."

Enter says the dog is going to be put down.

Hospital officials say Foust was still in surgery Monday night. The family expects him to be in the hospital for at least a few days.
