Newport police officers arraigned on drug and money laundering scheme

NEWPORT (WATE) - Three of the suspects in a drug and money laundering scheme involving Newport police officers were arraigned in a Cocke County courtroom Monday.

Detective Captain James Holt, his wife, Alderwoman Kathy Holt, her son Kenneth Myers and Detective Captain Roger Lynn Shults have all been charged in the case.

Kathy Holt, Myers and Shults were all arraigned Monday and will be back in court August 11.

James Holt will be in federal court tomorrow.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave without pay.

Court records show Holt is accused of knowingly purchasing stolen goods, including cigarettes, food and other items, and then selling them at his family store.

Holt allegedly also exchanged Xanax pills for the stolen goods.

His wife is accused of carrying out the financial transactions while her son Kenneth Myers and Detective Shults allegedly assisted in negotiations regarding the stolen property.
