KNOXVILLE (WATE) -  Dozens of moms and kids headed out to Ijams Nature Center Friday morning for "The Big Latch On," a breastfeeding awareness event.

"We are really excited today to meet other breastfeeding moms and get be a part of this event," said Lauren Gandharva. "You still get a lot of weird looks and stuff in public, but it's getting easier and these kinds of groups just build so much confidence."

This event kicks off World Breastfeeding Week. Friday morning at 10:30 Knoxville time, thousands of mothers around the globe gathered to nurse their babies together.

"Babies should have the right to feed wherever and whenever they need to," said Sherri Hedberg with the East Tennessee Breastfeeding Coalition. "This is not meant in any way to judge people who don't breastfeed. This is really to support the ones who have made the choice or are able to and carry them through because this is an important issue and they do deserve our support and encouragement."
