Vols take the field for first fall practice

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Practice number one for team 118 is in the books after a spirited night at Haslam Field. The Vols welcomed 36 freshman to fall camp including 22 who didn't participate in spring practice.

Tennessee head coach Butch Jones said after practice that he thought the overall team speed had improved but he was far from satisfied. "The younger players have done a great job of following the older players but again as we continue through training camp, our practices need to improve," Jones said. "Championship teams have championship practices."

The players praised the offseason program. "We're in a lot better shape," said offensive lineman Marcus Jackson. "(Strength and conditioning coach) Lawson's program was really hard.  Lawson pushed us, we're in great shape." Added defensive back Cam Sutton, "It's only the beginning and it's a building process and we know our expectations that we need to get done. And as camp rolls a long and gets into the season we'll become more comfortable."

Jones mentioned after practice that Vol wide receiver and former Central standout Cody Blanc suffered a lower leg injury and will need an MRI. The Vols are back on the field for practice number two at 4pm Saturday.
