KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knocking on doors during his morning route, Mobile Meals volunteer Glenn Miller, who's better known as Lefty, brings a hot meal and a warm smile to those in need.

"He's real nice. He's so friendly and everything. He's a real blessing," said Estella, a 95-year-old woman Lefty delivers meals to.

To Lefty, his route consists of more than just daily stops, it's made up of friends in need.

The 73-year-old drives his Knox County route four days a week. He's volunteered for eight years and encourages others to do the same.

"I enjoy meeting my people here and doing a good deed everyday, because, if I didn't, I'd just be laying in bed watching ESPN," Lefty said.

Instead, he's out dropping off meals to nearly 20 senior citizens who cannot cook food for themselves, and have no one to help.

"If we don't give them a meal then they wouldn't get one," Lefty said.

Lefty brings more than just meals, he brings compassion, conversation and companionship.

"He'll end up helping them with yard work, or running an errand for them. If they're in the hospital, he'll come and see them," said Mobile Meals Manager, Judith Perlot.

That is the reason why workers at Mobile Meals nominated Lefty for the national Meals on Wheels American Volunteer Contest.

"I am really excited, like a kid on Christmas with a new toy," Lefty said.

Lefty's one of 37 people across the country up for the grand prize and he needs your vote.

"We're just excited that the volunteer state could potentially be the one with the best volunteer," said Mobile Meals Volunteer Coordinator, Shelly Woodrick.

However, no matter the results of the national contest, Lefty's the clear winner to those he helps in Knox County.

If Lefty wins, Mobile Meals gets $1,000 to help the program, which serves 800 meals daily to senior citizens in Knox County.

You have until August 13 to vote for Lefty.
