Oak Ridge hit-and-run suspect crashes motorcycle in North Knox County

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A hit-and-run suspect from Oak Ridge is in the hospital after crashing his motorcycle in North Knox County on Friday morning.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office says James F. Mitchell, 43, tried to negotiate a curve too fast and ran off the right side of the road into a ditch at 9638 East Emory Road at 7:43 a.m.

Sometime before the crash, Oak Ridge Police Department alerted Knox County Sheriff's Office that Mitchell was a suspect in a hit-and-run investigation and to be on the lookout.

A Knox County deputy spotted Mitchell traveling eastbound on West Emory Road at 7:42 a.m. when the officer got behind Mitchell and activated his emergency equipment, deputies say Mitchell crashed on a curve and was thrown from his motorcycle.

Mitchell was transported to UT Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. Deputies say he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Multiple charges against Mitchell are pending. The Knox County Sheriff's Office says he has a criminal history in Knox County that includes reckless driving, driving without a license and schedule II drugs.
