ETSU finalizing plans for "Sex Week"

Posted: Updated:

Plans are being finalized and an official name has been chosen as East Tennessee State University prepares for a sex education event next semester. The official name for the event is "Sex Week at ETSU".

Max Carwile, the organizer of ETSU's Sex Week tells News Channel 11 after submitting a poll to students, they decided the name for the event should in fact be "Sex Week".

This comes after earlier this year the Tennessee House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning the University of Tennessee's inaugural "Sex Week" event. UT's event still went on as scheduled because the resolution could not prevent sex week from happening. Organizers of the UT campus wide observance says it encourages an open and honest discussion about sexuality, diversity and the human experience.

ETSU's student body president, Doretha Benn says she agrees with the educational approach to having a sex week event. "We're all adults here, we're all in college and we know that people are going to have sex so we might as well educate them on how to be healthy about it so no sexually transmitted diseases come into play, no unplanned pregnancies, rape, or sexual misconduct just to mark those out".

Sex week at ETSU is scheduled for February 10th-12th.
