KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville took top honors in Allstate Insurance Company's annual report, ranking #1 for best drivers in the southern region and 27th safest among America's 200 largest cities.

The southern region includes the states of Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. The rankings are part of the tenth annual "Allstate America's Best Drivers Report," which considers factors such as collision frequency related to population, population density and precipitation.

So 6 News wanted to know what drivers thought about the ranking.

"I would generally agree with that. I think people are pretty conscientious here in town especially given the amount of traffic that comes through here," said Brent Boutwell of Knoxville.

Others say the number one rating may be a stretch.

"I mean I see just as many accidents here as I do anywhere else and you see those numbers that they put on the highway, which haven't gotten any better from them putting the signs on the highway," said Rebecca Weiner of Knoxville.

According to the 2014 report, the average driver in Knoxville will experience an auto collision every 11.1 years. This year's report saw a decrease from the 2013 report, when Knoxville drivers ranked 11.8 collisions per year.

Allstate says some Tennessee cities' saw a change in their rankings, for the first time this year. Their interactive mapping tool was able to also consider how location factors such as population, population density and precipitation weight a city's driving safety ranking.

When taking challenging Tennessee roadway conditions into consideration, Allstate says, Knoxville drivers ranked better than other areas.

Nationally, Fort Collins, Colorado was ranked "America's Safest Driving City" for the fourth year in a row. According to the report, the average driver in Fort Collins will experience a collision every 14.2 years, which is 29.6 percent less likely than the national average of 10 years.
