KNOXVILLE (WATE and AP) -- In a terse, two-sentence statement released Monday morning, UT sports officials said head basketball coach Buzz Peterson has been fired.

The statement read, "University of Tennessee Director of Athletics Mike Hamilton announced today that Buzz Peterson will not return as head basketball coach.''

Peterson went 61-59 overall with no NCAA tournament appearances during his four years with the Volunteers. He had losing seasons in two of his four years and a 2-4 record in the SEC tourney.

The Vols finished 14-17 overall and 6-10 in the Southeastern Conference this season.

The Vols were soundly whipped by the Kentucky Wildcats last week in the second round of the SEC tournament. [ game recap ] [ tournament bracket ]

Peterson's contract ran through the 2008-09 season with a base salary of $220,000. Incentives and other deals pushed his annual income much higher than that. Under the contract terms, Tennessee owes him a $1.36 million buyout, which must be paid within 30 days. [ UT adds to Peterson's contract ]

The Vols still owe former coach Jerry Green one more payment of $210,000 from his buyout contract.

Peterson, 41, is former head coach at Tulsa and Appalachian State. He also served in assistant coaching positions on the basketball staff of Appalachian State, East Tennessee State, North Carolina State, and Vanderbilt.

Peterson was hired by Tennessee on April 4, 2001 after guidding Tulsa to a 26-11 record and a National Invitation Tournament championship. He replaced to Green, who was fired after getting Tennessee into the NCAA tournament four years in a row.
