"Picture perfect" weather expected for Easter Sunday

Today’s forecast is just about “picture perfect”. We will see plenty of sunshine, light wind, low relative humidity values and highs right about where we should be for this time of year, so please enjoy it! The area of high pressure giving us this nice day will slowly drift eastward on Monday, but we should still see a lot of sunshine and temperatures in the low-mid 70s. It doesn’t last though as a cold front pushes into the area on Tuesday producing widespread showers and even a few thunder...More >>

KINGSTON (WATE) -- Law enforcement officers in Roane County are searching for a man they say was involved in a shooting that killed a sheriff's deputy and a civilian riding with the officer.

Deputy Bill Jones, 53, and Mike Brown were shot to death around 6:30 p.m. as they tried to serve a felony warrant on a pair of brothers, Leon and Rocky Houston, at their home in the rural Ten Mile neighborhood south of Kingston.

According to the TBI, the deputy and Brown were still in the patrol car in the Houston's driveway when the two suspects began firing shots into the vehicle with a high-powered rifle. One neighbor claims he heard at least 20 shots fired.

Brown had permission to participate in a ride-along program with Jones, who's described as a good friend of his.

Officers from local and state agencies are in pursuit of Leon, who fled the scene with Rocky, after the shooting, going to a relative's house. The TBI says the pair asked for a ride to Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

On the way to the hospital, investigators say Leon asked to be let out in the area of Midway Cemetery on Dogtown Road.

Rocky was wounded in the wrist and hip and was taken into custody at Methodist Medical Center as he was being treated for his wounds.

Rocky Houston was later transferred to UT Medical Center.

Authorities believe Leon fled on foot and may be in the Barnard Narrows and Dogtown roads area south of Kingston.

According to a spokesman with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Houston brothers have been known to authorities for several years with a history of assaults and making threats on public officials and officers.

Leon is considered armed and dangerous. If you see him, do not approach him. Contact authorities immediately.

Deputy Jones had served with the Roane County Sheriff's Department for about a year. However, he had a long career in law enforcement. He had served for at least 25 years as a police officer. He had worked in Cumberland County and in Rockwood and Harriman.

School authorities have cancelled classes at all three schools in Midway for Friday because of the search for the fugitive suspect.

Midway High School served as the site of a command center Thursday night for officers involved in the search.
