MARYVILLE (WATE) -- A woman is dead after an overnight apartment fire in Maryville and investigators say a heater may be to blame.

According to one of her friends, the victim was Dyan Foulks, 57.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out around 2:30 a.m. at a unit of Scenic Terrace Apartments on Wales Avenue. It's at the corner of south Everett High Road.

Damage from the fire was contained to the unit where the flames started.

Despite that, eight families were evacuated from the complex as a precaution.

"I heard a smoke detector going on upstairs at about 2:30 and so I went up there to see what was going on because I heard stuff falling. When I got up there, the smoke was rolling out of the door and the blinds were already melted," says Melissa Gredig, a neighbor who called 911.

Her friend and fellow church member, Kathy Potter, says she got a call Wednesday morning saying Foulks had died.

Potter also says Foulks had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and the radiation she received Tuesday may have caused her to sleep through her smoke alarm.

"We're going to love her and miss her," Potter says. "But thank God, I know in my heart she's in heaven with the Lord."

Investigators from the state Fire Marshall's Office say the fire may have been caused by a problem with a baseboard heater and the fire appears to be accidental.

A preliminary autopsy determined Foulks' died of smoke inhalation.
