Unclaimed IRS refunds: Are you on the list?

NASHVILLE (WATE) -- The IRS has $1.46 million worth of refunds that need to be claimed in Tennessee. Are you on the list?

Refund checks are mailed to a taxpayer's last known address. But those checks are returned if you move without telling the IRS or the Postal Service.

The refund checks, averaging about $767 in Tennessee, can be claimed as soon as taxpayers update their addresses with the IRS.

Taxpayers in 87 Tennessee counties have checks waiting.

Three East Tennessee counties made the list of highest total dollars of undelivered checks:

County Number of checks Average refund
Knox 128 $689
Blount 25 $3,265
Hamblen 19 $1,083

The "Where's My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov allows you to check the status of your refund. You have to submit your Social Security number, filing status and amount of the refund shown on your 2006 tax return.

Where's My Refund will show the status of your refund, and in some cases, it will give instructions on how to resolve delivery problems.

You can also use a telephone version of "Where's My Refund?" by calling 1-800-829-1954.

IRS officials say they hope to get the money into the owners' hands in time for the holidays.

Signing up for direct deposit can prevent your refunds from being returned, lost or stolen.
