Hundreds receive Thanksgiving baskets from Knox Area Rescue Ministries

KNOXVILLE (WATE)--  It's been more than 17-years since Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM) started serving Thanksgiving baskets to those in need.

Sunday afternoon, hundreds who might not have had a turkey this holiday lined Broadway in downtown Knoxville for the Thanksgiving basket giveaway.

For Linda Nicely and her family, turkey was always on the table at Thanksgiving. She says standing in line for a turkey just days before the big holiday is the last place she ever thought she'd be.

"My husband is a carpenter and he's out of work. He's been out of work for five months," said Nicely.

The Nicelys are just one of about 1,200 families who turned to KARM for traditional staples of a Thanksgiving feast, some waiting in line for almost an hour.

"I am so glad we got to come out here because we wouldn't have had a Thanksgiving without it," added Nicely.

The families were pre-screened for the Thanksgiving baskets that have everything they need to cook the big meal themselves.

If it weren't for volunteers like Rhonda Holloway, the event wouldn't be the huge success that it's been for the past 17 years.

"There is nothing greater than to give back to other people like this and to help them and help their Thanksgiving," said Holloway.

The Nicelys say they're just thankful they had a place to turn to for help during their hard time.
