Alcoa wins 4th straight state title

MURFREESBORO (WATE) -- On Friday night the Alcoa Tornadoes won a record 4th straight state championship, easily dispatching Goodpasture 35-3 in the Class 2A title game.

Alcoa quarterback Randall Cobb, who is deciding between playing next year at Kentucky or Tennessee, gave his collegiate suitors a lot to remember in his last high school football game.  Cobb ran for two scores and passed for one touchdown as well, and Alcoa led 21-0 at the half.

When Alcoa running back Troy Hodge scored on an 11 yard touchdown scamper early in the third quarter, the game was all but over.  Hodge added a 4th quarter TD run for the final score of the game.

This is the 3rd straight season that the Tornadoes have beaten Goodpasture for the state title.  For Alcoa head coach Gary Rankin, this is his 6th state championship overall, and second at Alcoa.

"Our kids played so hard and believed in everything we were doing," said Rankin.  "So proud of our kids, our school, our community, the whole Alcoa community.  This never gets old."

"Words can't describe how I feel," said Cobb.  "It's unbelievable.  I just came out played my hardest for my teammates and my community, and everything came out good."

No team in TSSAA history has won four straight state championships.  Maryville has a shot to match Alcoa on Saturday in the Class 4A title game.
