KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- The baby boy who was found in a Jefferson City day care in September 2007 with a pacifier taped in his mouth has passed away.

Deshawn Bounds died on January 1.

Deshawn was taken to a hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. after he stopped breathing on December 30. A family member was able to revive Deshawn once but he stopped breathing again and had to be rushed to the ER.

The family of his mother, Nicole Toner, 16, is from Philadelphia and had gone there for the holidays.

Deshawn's body is at a medical examiner's in Pa. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. The results aren't expected until early March.

Philadelphia police say they're investigating Deshawn's death, as standard procedure.

Toner's great grandmother tells 6 News his death is a mystery to them and his father, Michael Bounds, 16, had nothing to do with the death.

The Bounds family says Deshawn will be buried in Pa.

Two workers at the Noah's Ark Nursery School in Jefferson City were charged with child abuse for the incident involving Deshawn. They've each been indicted by a grand jury for child neglect and reckless endangerment.

The day care is closed and the owners surrendered the license.
