Mother, father charged with child abuse in Knox Co.

KNOX COUNTY (WATE) -- A mother and father were arrested last week for child abuse and neglect.

The sheriff's office says Linsie Kohls, 22, and Lee Stiles, 23, were charged April 11 with abusing and neglecting children under age six.

Deputies were called to Baker Town apartments for a welfare check on two children. They found an 18-month-old boy and a two-and-a-half-year old girl locked in a bare room.

There were wires attached to the door knob to keep it from being opened.

Kohls told officers the last time she had checked on the children was the night before.

Neighbors said they often heard the children beat on the walls and cry at night. They also said they never saw them outside.

The only food where the children were found was a bottle with curdled milk.

The state Department of Children's Services removed the children and put them in the care of their maternal grandmother.

On Monday, Juvenile Court put the children in state custody.

The couple was released from the Knox County Jail after each posted a $10,000 bond.
