ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WATE) -- It's 116 miles from Knoxville to Asheville, North Carolina, a city filled with things to do for the entire family.

Most notably, the city is known for its love of the arts, music, crafts and diverse eateries.

In downtown, 6 News found many outdoor cafes serving everything from Southern cooking to vegetarian food.

For those who love to shop, one stop to hit is the Grove Arcade Gallery Market. It's filled with boutique shopping, dining and regional crafts in a building that first opened as a public market in 1929.

The market was renovated and reopened to the public in 2002.

It would be a crime to visit Asheville and not build your trip around the 205 room Biltmore Estate.

The beautiful behemoth of a mansion, built by George Vanderbilt starting in 1889, is the largest privately owned home in the nation. It sits on 120,000 acres.

From the jaw dropping exterior and interior to the colorful gardens next door, there's enough to make this an all day stop on your trip.

The city is also near the Pisgah National Forest, as well as some wonderful state parks.

For just $5.00, at Lake Julian Park, you can take out a paddle boat, feed the geese or cast a line for a little peace and quiet.

If trout is more your catch of choice, what about fly fishing on North Mills River?

"There is good road access to this river. There is a lot of fish to be caught in the spring and fall and winter and it is a gorgeous area. I mean, just being out here is worth every minute of it," says local fly fisher Clyde Bolin.

For this trip, 6 News had about a half a tank left to make it back to Knoxville. But remember, there's a lot to do in Asheville so you could use more gas than that for your trip.

The bulk of our budget was spent at the Biltmore Estate. Summer rates for adults range from about $45 to $50 and $25 for children.
