Knoxville Opera addresses criticism

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – The latest production of the Knoxville Opera, “Madame Butterfly” is getting backlash for some costuming choices.

The controversy: Non-Asian actors painted and costumed to reflect Asian characters, instead of hiring an Asian or Asian-American cast for the production of “Madame Butterfly.”

Knoxville Opera’s executive and artistic director, Brian Salesky, stopped by the WATE 6 On Your Side studios to address the criticism.
