SEEED Knox is an organization that helps young people get ready for the world and now, they’re throwing an event that allows the community to support the great work they’re doing – as well as the young people involved.
SEEED, Socially Equal Energy Efficient Development, creates pathways out of poverty for young
adults through career readiness training, while equipping communities with environmental literacy
Program director of SEEED Knox, Treasure Hightower, stopped by the WATE 6 On Your Side newsroom studio to tell us more.
On April 10, SEEED is hosting its BBQ Meet And Greet event, which will support its Community Engagement Boot Camp.
“The Boot Camp is an intensive 3-week paid training program that imparts critical life and job skills for young adults while educating the community about issues that affect community members,” Hightower said.
Students who successfully complete Boot Camp will be hired as Community Engagement Specialists in
SEEED’s social enterprise, Green Community Awareness Program (GreenCAP). Current GreenCAP
campaigns involve collecting Community Issues Surveys, conducting Green House Calls, and
organizing energy and water conservation workshops.
So, in essence, it connects them to jobs that help not only their personal growth, but also that of the community with outreach.
According to Hightower, 8 students have already completed the Boot Camp.
“Eight students have successfully completed Boot Camp, and are now hired as Community Engagement Specialists at SEEED,” Hightower said.
Community members are invited to celebrate with SEEED Knox at a graduation ceremony this Thursday, March 27th at 6 p.m. in the Community Room at the new Public Works Building, located at 205 West Baxter Avenue.
Again, the BBQ Meet And Greet event is happening Wednesday, April 10 at SEEED (1617
Dandridge Ave. Knoxville, TN 37915).
Tickets are $10 available on Facebook, EventBrite, seeedknox.com, and will be available for purchase on the day of the event.
