Alcohol a contributing factor in fatal South Knoxville crash

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – One person is dead an another is injured after a car crashed into a tree in South Knoxville.

Knoxville Police Department (KPD) said they responded to a single-vehicle crash on Taylor and Bob White Road at approximately 3:15 a.m.

Officers said a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina was traveling West on Taylor Road when the vehicle left the road and struck a tree.

The passenger was out of the vehicle when officers arrived, but the driver was trapped inside the vehicle according to KPD.

The Knoxville Fire Department’s Heavy Rescue Unit was able to free the driver from the car.

Both the driver and the passenger of the car were transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center. The driver was pronounced dead, according to KPD. The passenger was treated for what officer said appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

Neither the passenger or the driver were wearing a seat belt according to KPD. Investigators also said they found several open bottles of alcohol in plain view of the vehicle.

According to a preliminary investigation speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in the crash.

Names have not been released until investigators notify next-of-kin.
