OLIVER SPRINGS, Tenn. (WATE) — Authorities say a woman died following a shooting early Monday in Oliver Springs. The Oliver Springs Police Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are working the case. One man has now been charged with First Degree Murder.

A TBI spokesperson says the TBI is working alongside Oliver Springs Police in investigating a homicide that occurred in the 100 block of Midway Drive.

A news release from TBI states just after 6:30, the Oliver Springs Police Department received a report of a disturbance at a home in the 100 block of Midway. Upon arrival, officers located a woman inside the home deceased. A man barricaded himself inside the residence but was taken into custody a short time later. At this time, the TBI says the investigation is ongoing.

The woman has been identified as Janice Newport. According to a TBI report, her husband, Nathan Newport, is believed to be responsible for her death. He has been charged with first-degree murder and he is being held in the Anderson County Jail without bond.

Earlier Monday, Anderson County Emergency Medical Services said people should avoid the area. In a social media post shared around 8:10 a.m., the EMS group stated the “heavy law enforcement presence” was located in the area of Midway Drive.

“Please stay clear of that area,” the post read. “Midway Drive between Fowler Street and the Marathon gas station is closed.”

Anderson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chief Deputy Brian Galloway later said the Oliver Springs Police investigators were working on a reported shooting on Midway Drive.
