The University of Tennessee is preparing to welcome new students and residents with a welcome week of events.
Early moving days for certain academic programs are already underway with the full move-in day to take place on Saturday, August 18. Fall semester will get underway Wednesday, August 22.
“It’s close to home, and it’s a good school. It’s good for what you pay for and so yeah I’m excited,” incoming freshman Lauren Donnelly said.
Her family helped her Wednesday morning unloading boxes and bags, wheeling it all in and deciding how to make her half of the room feel like home. Her parents were eager to see what is next for Lauren.
“I’m very excited, a little nervous for her,” said her dad Edwin Donnelly. “It’s a little sad. I mean we’re going to miss her, but just seeing her grow up and get bigger and do more stuff is really more exciting I think.”
Lauren is one of about 7,500 students who will be moving into dorms at UT this week ready for newfound independence.
“Just being able to do my own thing, not having to be on other people’s schedules and stuff,” Lauren said.
The schedule of welcome week events features a variety of interesting activities to welcome new students and familiarize them with the campus.
New students can take part in a giant class photo on Sunday, August 19 at 5 p.m. when the class of 2022 will congregate on the indoor practice football field. Students will receive a free shirt to wear in the photo.
Later in the day on Sunday, the new student picnic at the Clarence Brown Theatre will provide, food, live music from local artists and the chance to get to know thousands of fellow freshman. The new student picnic will begin at 6 p.m.
New students can also attend a welcome event Sunday at the student recreational and fitness center pool. The Black Cultural Programming Committee will host their annual pool party with live entertainment. It will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday.
