WATE 6 On Your Side’s own Laura Halm is taking to the ballroom floor to compete in the tenth and final edition of Dancing with the Knoxville Stars.
The event, which is hosted each year by East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, brings together celebrities from the Knoxville area to compete and raise money for the hospital.
Dance pro Gaberial Akers is paired with Halm and is choreographing their dance.
“For the most part I think we’re doing really good for where we’re at,” he sad.
Halm, who competed for years as an Irish step dancer and swing dances regularly, is participating this year to make sure families in East Tennessee have the chance to get the quality care they need.
“A few years ago I met an incredible little boy and his family,” said Halm. “Their four-year-old had a number of tumors on his brain. Their faith, love, and resiliency blew me away. They shared their story with me and to this day I follow their journey, because it’s not over.”
“It means a lot to me, just having somewhere to go that’s safe and comfortable and it won’t be a traumatic thing for the child is comforting,” added Akers.
She will be hosting a charity ride at TurboSpinCycling on Friday, April 6 at 5:30. You can sign up for the class by going to www.turbospincycling.com. The class is free of charge to sign up but requires a $25 donation upon class check-in.
From April 2-9, Nothing Bundt Cakes will also be donating $1 to the fundraiser each time a pecan praline bundlet is sold.
This year’s competition is slated for Saturday, April 14 at the Knoxville Convention Center. Tickets are $75 each and include dinner, or you can purchase a VIP table for four for $400. VIP tables include dinner and complimentary champagne.
“To be a part of something so much bigger than yourself, getting to be part of something that effects so many people on a day-to-day basis is wonderful and it makes me sad to think this isn’t going to be here next year when it’s one thing you look forward to all year,” said Akers.
Other celebrities include WBIR’s Leslie Ackerson, Star 102.1’s Tyrone Beach, WVLT’s Heather Haley, former Atlanta Falcon’s cheerleader Lisa Henderson, TV host Sara Mitchell, Children’s Hospital physician Dr. Amit Patel, philanthropist Sylvia Peters and GoVols247 writer Wes Rucker.
The event, presented by Star 102.1, is a spinoff of the popular ABC show, Dancing with the Stars. Each celebrity is paired up with a professional dance partner. The winner is determined by the judges’ votes on the night of the competition as well as the amount of money raised by each dancer — one dollar equals one vote. The event has raised more than $735,000 for the children’s hospital.
