Zoo Knoxville is asking local businesses, community church groups and other organizations to participate in the “Gorillas on the Line, Answer the Call” cell phone recycling challenge that runs through April 30.

The zoo is participating with other zoos across North America in the campaign that utilizes cell phone recycling to save gorillas in the African wild.

There are 3 easy steps to participate:

1. Answer the Call: Register here with your local coordinator (Zoo Knoxville’s Steve McGaffin at smcgaffin@zooknoxville.org | 865-637-5331 ext. 1360). Steve will follow up with contest details and tools to help your group with the campaign.

2. Recycle those phones: Gather your team and collect as many phones for recycling as possible, beginning Feb. 1 – April 30. Then, ship your phones to Eco-Cell by the first Friday in May (the 3rd). Eco-Cell will send a free shipping label when the group registers; once they’re sent in, they’ll process the phones and tabulate the totals.

Contest winners are announced the first week of June, nationally. Winners in Zoo Knoxville’s region will be announced in mid-May.

3. Save the gorillas: Why recycled cell phone save gorillas – Coltan is a mineral found in phones and other small electronic devices; it is mined from areas where endangered gorillas live and habitate. So, recycling old cell phones helps to reduce the demand of coltan and protects gorilla habitats in Africa.

Zoo Knoxville wants Knoxville to represent as it participates in the campaign with other zoos across our nation!  Gorillas are on the line – answer the call, give your old cell phones, and help save their habitats.
