Think your red eyes at the pool are caused by chlorine? Think again.

According to a new report by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention , those red, burning eyes are actually caused by irritants in the pool like urine, sweat and dirt.

And you know that pool smell? It’s caused by those irritants mixing with the chlorine.

According to the CDC, the cleanest pools are the ones exposed to fresh air with little chemical odor.

The CDC says you can protect yourself and others by showering before you get in the water and keeping the water out of your mouth.
