NEW TAZEWELL, Tenn. (WATE) — A former volunteer for several fire departments in Claiborne County died Friday, May 26 in a rollover crash, according to the New Tazewell Fire Department.

Anthony Shane Collins, 23, was killed in the wreck. Passengers in the vehicle included two girls and a 3-year-old, but it is unclear if any were injured. The child was in a car seat and all were properly restrained, according to a preliminary report by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

New Tazewell Fire, North Claiborne Volunteer Fire Department and Harrogate Volunteer Fire Department responded to Wheeler Road in Harrogate around 11:30 a.m. after reports of a rollover crash with a possible entrapment.

The preliminary report says Collins was traveling north on Wheeler Road in a 1999 Chevy Tahoe when the right set of tires went into the ditch. Collins overcorrected, causing the Tahoe to cross into the southbound lanes. The driver overcorrected again, sending the Tahoe into the ditch on the northbound side, where it rolled over onto the the driver’s side.

While helping victims from the Tahoe, Collins was found fatally injured. According to New Tazewell Fire, Collins had taken a leave of absence but had been planning to return.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
