Confederate statue vandalized on Murfreesboro’s square

A Confederate memorial was found vandalized on Murfreesboro’s town square Wednesday morning. 

Some type of paint was placed over the wording on the Rutherford County Confederate Memorial, which was dedicated in 1901.

Murfreesboro police said the vandalism was reported by a witness just before 10:30 Tuesday night. 

The witness reported a person wearing a light-colored trenchcoat was spray paining the base of the statue.

The damage was documented and the case is under investigation.

The statue is “In commemoration of the valor of Confederate Soldiers who fell in the great battle of Murfreesboro Dec. 31, 1862 to Jan. 3, 1983 and in minor engagements in his vicinity.”

Crews are already working to remove the paint from the momument.
