KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Crews with Rural Metro Fire-Knox County put out a commercial fire in the 3100 block of Water Plant Drive Thursday afternoon.

The fire was in the coffee processing area at the Keurig/Dr. Pepper plant according to Rural Metro. A release from Rural Metro explained that power had been lost to the coffee grinder. However, the burners continued to heat the beans causing the container to blow apart catching on fire throughout the vent system.

On Thursday afternoon, one of our roasters experienced a power failure, leaving it unable to circulate the high-temperature coffee that was nearing the end of its roast.  Our safety protocols were initiated and worked as designed.  We thank the Rural Metro-Fire Department for their response and support in helping ensure the incident was contained to the single roaster. No further damage was incurred.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in the roof system and then put out the fire in the processing area on the main floor. Around 200 employees were evacuated, but Rural Metro said no injuries were reported.

Corporate officials are working to determine the cause of the incident.
