KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Tax time is getting closer, and there are resources for those who meet certain income requirements in the Knoxville area to have your returns done for free.
A total of 187,055 tax returns were filed in Knox County in 2013, and 66 percent of them were low income returns. Free tax preparation accounted for only 4,977 of those returns or around four percent.
United Way of Greater Knoxville says many people who can’t afford to have their taxes prepared professionally are doing so anyway, when they can have them done for free.
If your income is $54,000 or below, you can call 211 to find out how to have your taxes done for free. You can also visit www.myfreetaxes.com, where your income must be $62,000 or below.
