Great Smoky Mountains road opens early due to mild temperatures

GATLINBURG (WATE) – Clingmans Dome Road will open early according to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers said if weather permits they will open the road on Friday. Clingmans dome road is typically closed December 1 to March 31 due to winter weather.

Park crews said they were able to prepare the road for the seasonal spring opening ahead of schedule due to mild temperatures this week.

At 6,643 feet Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Rangers said they will continue to monitor the road.
