KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Knox County Criminal Court Clerk Mike Hammond says his office has corrected errors going back 17 years that had kept criminal cases from being wiped clean, caused by computer errors.

Hammond held a press conference Wednesday morning to announce his office found that for a criminal record ordered expunged to be completely wiped clean, the name and other information would have had to be removed from multiple databases and in some cases, that hadn’t happened.

The Knox County Department of Information Technology then became involved at Hammond’s request and found 1,650 cases, some going back as far as 17 years, had been affected. All have since been corrected, but Hammond says there’s no way to know that every case with incomplete data has been expunged. Anyone who wants to inquire about a past expunged case is asked to call Hammond at (865) 215-3455 or email mike.hammond@knoxcounty.org.
