KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — UPDATE 10:30 p.m. — A 40-year-old man has been identified after what investigators say was a road rage incident that led to a fatal shooting on Dry Gap Pike off Emory Road Friday morning.

According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office’s initial investigation, Harry Walker Fersner Jr. of Knoxville was shot during the road rage incident. No further details were given.

KCSO said late Friday that the investigation remains active.

Four people detained in fatal shooting off East Emory Road

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Four people are being detained following a fatal shooting off East Emory Road in Knox County.

Knox County Sheriff Tom Spangler said a call came in around 10:30 a.m. Friday of a shooting in the 1700 block of Dry Gap Pike. When law enforcement arrived, a person was found lying in the middle of the road.

Spangler said preliminary reports indicate two individuals were arguing at a preliminary location. The individuals were driving along the roadway when they stopped and an altercation ensued.

“It’s very odd, very strange,” Spangler said. “Unfortunate.”

Nearby Brickey McCloud Elementary School was placed on lockdown as a precaution. All students and staff are safe, Spangler said.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Department is investigating the shooting.
