KNOXVILLE (WATE) – If you haven’t seen a performance at Knoxville Children’s Theatre, you are missing out. The shows are colorful and well-crafted.
Sien Moon, president of the theater’s board of directors, volunteers 60 hours a week to take care of everything from the smallest details like T-shirt sales to the bigger picture: making sure each performance is professionally done and each child taking part onstage or behind the scenes, enjoys the experience.
“I think the thing that is most heart warming for me: every child that comes into this place loves it, and it’s like a big family, and it just keeps growing and growing and growing,” Moon says. She was a driving force in securing the current larger space for the theater on Churchwell Avenue in Knoxville three years ago, moving from it’s former tiny location on Tyson Street.
Everyone who knows Moon says the children’s theater exists because of her. “Every part of the show revolves around her and all the kinds of pieces that fit together are because of her and the theatre works because of her, ” says Kylee Hines, an actress in the current performance of Snow White and Rose Red.
Another young performer, Eric Magee, says “we wouldn’t be half the way we are here if it hadn’t been for her.”
“She’s a real problem solver, hands on, hard worker, and a big dreamer, and that’s a powerful combination,” said Zack Allen, a producing director of the theater.
Those accolades are touching for Moon, but when she learned it was her daughter Bethany who nominated her for our hero award, she was blown away.
“I had no idea she was my nominator,” said moon. “She’s just a very , very sweet child – that she took the time to do it, and thank me, it just warms my heart so much.”
“I nominated her, ” Bethany tearfully says, “because she is more than deserving and I’m not just saying this because I’m her daughter. Everyone here knows how much she means to this theater and what she does for us.”
