KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Knoxville Police Department is investigating an alleged rape involving a member of the University of Tennessee football team, whom the university says is suspended from all team activities.

Officers say the victim identified the suspect as Von Pearson, 23, originally from Newport News, Virginia, who plays wide receiver for the team. He is currently a senior at the University of Tennessee.

Police were called to Pearson’s apartment at University Walk Apartments, 2308 Forest Avenue, around 6 a.m. Friday. Investigators took statements from a female and several witnesses and alerted the Sexual Assault Center.

Witnesses told WATE 6 On Your Side they spotted the woman near the gates of the apartment complex and she seemed upset. They decided to drive her to the Hodges Library on the University of Tennessee Campus where they spotted an officer and told him what allegedly happened.

After UT police finished talking with the victim, she was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for a forcible rape, according to police. The investigation is still in the early stages and police say it is ongoing. No further information has been released and no charges have been filed.

The University of Tennessee Police Department said they were notified of the incident, made contact with the victim and turned the case over to the Knoxville Police Department.

Associate Athletic Director Jimmy Stanton says Pearson has been indefinitely suspended from all team activities.
