KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – The Knoxville Police Department is warning drivers to avoid World’s Fair Park Drive between Clinch Avenue and 11th Avenue due to a sinkhole.
“Geologically it is not a sinkhole there is not a big cavern underneath where there’s a big space in the bedrock it’s just a failed pipe,” said Jim Hagerman, the City of Knoxville’s Director of Engineering.
That failed pipe is about 24 inches, now rusted and collapsed, having been under that stretch of road since the 1982 World’s Fair.
“…. so it’s not super old but old enough,” Hagerman said.
The City of Knoxville was made aware of the three-foot-wide, 15-feet-deep hole on Saturday and immediately closed the road indefinitely.
“We have taken a look at it all and this is the only section that is in really critical failing condition,” said Hagerman. “We put our camera, our little robot camera, up all those pipes. None of them are about to fail like this one.”
According to Hagerman, the work will be done in house by the city and repairs are expected to be finished by the weekend.
