A 200-year-old house in Cocke County was destroyed in a fire earlier this week.
The Cocke County Fire Department says they were called to the Graham home on Rankin Road just after 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Heavy fire and smoke was coming from the 5,000 square foot building.
Firefighters tried to enter the home but the fire was moving too quickly so they had to retreat to a defensive attack.
Crews were able to get a gun safe and a tractor out of the building, but other guns and one of three family bulldogs did not survive. Ammunition was heard going off in the home.
No one was inside at the time. The owner was working on the farm. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. The value of the home and its contents exceeded $1 million.
Donations of gift cards are being accepted for the family at the First United Methodist Church office in Newport or Campbell and Hooper Law Offices, also in Newport.
